AJ comentoesto: "When I was growing up, I did my own thing," says A.J. McLean of Backstreet Boys. "It's still the same way." That explains the lip piercing, those 20 tattoos -- he's aiming for 23, one for each birthday candle -- and his fierce determination to stand apart from the other Boys. A.J.'s "one-man posse," as he calls it, has had a standout year: He sings lead on much of Backstreet's multiplatinum Black & Blue CD ("The most vocally challenging record for me, personally," he says); he gets major screen time in "The Call" video; and last March, performing covers under the alias Johnny No Name, A.J. embarked on a tour sans his fellow Backstreeters to benefit the VH1 Save the Music Foundation. "The solo stuff allowed me to be more mouthy about things and not be so restrictive about saying how I feel," says the Florida native. "I'm a strong team player, but I like to stand on my own and do the crazy things I do." | |
